Institution: Cardiff University

As one of Britain's leading universities, Cardiff University is a major centre for postgraduates from throughout the UK, the EU and the rest of the world. Our thriving postgraduate community currently numbers over 7,000 students - some 28% of our student body. We offer a variety of research and taught postgraduate programmes, including more than 220 postgraduate taught courses and over 170 areas of postgraduate research.

Outstanding Research and Research-led Teaching

Cardiff is internationally recognised as being one of Britain’s major teaching and research universities and is a member of the Russell Group, the UK’s top 20 research intensive universities. The Research Assessment exercise 2008 showed that world-leading research is being undertaken throughout Cardiff University. In addition to the benefits our research brings to society, our research contributes significantly to the high quality of teaching.

A First-Class Study Environment

In excess of £200 million has been invested in recent years to provide students with modern and well-equipped facilities that create a first-class environment in which to live and study. Postgraduates at Cardiff benefit from a variety of new or recently refurbished lecture theatres and laboratories, state-of-the-art resource centres and comfortable study areas located throughout the University.

Dedicated Postgraduate Facilities

The University has invested in a range of provision specifically to meet postgraduate needs. These facilities include our own dedicated Graduate Centre which serves as a hub for taught and research postgraduates and is a source of academic and social facilities, as well as a centre for the broader postgraduate community. All research students will also belong to our Graduate College which exists to foster an intellectually stimulating environment where students are encouraged to share and develop research interests with colleagues from other academic schools and to feel part of a wider research community.

An Attractive, Convenient Location

The main University campus is located in and around Cardiff’s magnificent civic centre. Academic buildings, student residences, the Graduate Centre, the Students’ Union and the city centre are within a short walk of each other, saving you time and money on travel. A short distance away is the Heath Park campus, a multi-professional healthcare environment which shares a site with the University Hospital of Wales.

Capital City Advantages

Cardiff has been hailed the most desirable city in the United Kingdom in which to live and work. It combines the practical advantages of a small, friendly, inexpensive city with the cultural and recreational amenities of a successful and modern capital.

Funding

Each year Cardiff University offers a range of funded, competitive studentships to support postgraduate study. These include our prestigious Presidents Research Scholarships which will provide 72 RCUK rate scholarships over the next two years. Other Funding sources include the UK Research Councils, awards made by academic schools, and collaborations with industry, business, government departments and other bodies. Awards can range in value from partial or full tuition fees support to awards which include a stipend to help with living costs. You should check your eligibility for specific studentships carefully; some are restricted to UK/EU applicants and others are open to non-EU applicants.

Studentships are advertised as they become available via external funding websites such as postgraduatestudentships.co.uk and also in our Funding and Scholarship Search at www.cardiff.ac.uk/searchforfunding. Information on new awards becomes available on virtually a weekly basis between February and August in advance of the new academic year in September, so you are advised to check back regularly for details of the latest studentships on offer at Cardiff.
