Doctoral training and support
Researchers studying for a higher degree at Cranfield are associated with one of several Doctoral Training Centres, which are funded in part by the Research Councils and industry. These cover the key research themes in science, engineering and technology across the university.
- Outstanding staff
Throughout their research studies, doctoral students are supervised and supported by academic staff who are globally-recognised leaders in their fields of research. Guidance and monitoring of research students is undertaken through a system of primary and secondary supervision, a preliminary 'check-point' review three months after start up, followed by a formally examined 'transfer' document, a mid-point review and a pre-submission 'check-point' review.
- Funded networking opportunities
Research groups provide funds for students to attend conferences and give strong encouragement to attend Research Council-held Summer Schools.
- Outstanding facilities
All of the industrial scale, state-of-the-art facilities are accessible to research students as tools for their work.
- Comprehensive library
The library staff are helpful and knowledgeable, with subject specific experts who are able to provide individual training and support for students. Researchers have access to nearly 200 databases and 8,500 electronic journal titles, core collections of books, journals and reports and an efficient interlibrary loan service to supplement our printed and electronic resources.
- Core skills training
The Doctoral Research Centre core skills training programme provides pro-active research training, guidance and performance monitoring to support research students. This includes subjects such as research methods, presentation skills, project planning and the business dimension. Teaching in specialist technical areas is additionally available as part of doctoral study and is organised individually by utilising the extensive range of Masters course modules.
