Study Details

MSc: 12-15 months full-time, MSc: 24-36 months part-time

The MSc Environmental Management offers a flexible course promoting academic development, directly applicable to professional practice in environmental management.

Working towards a sustainable, healthy future for people and their environment is a priority for society and a necessity for business. The MSc in Environmental Management will equip you with the skills and knowledge to respond to this need, for example through employment in the public sector or in environmental consultancy. In addition, you will also develop postgraduate qualities such as innovative thinking and practice, responsibility for continuing personal and professional development, initiative, awareness of ethical dimensions in research, and decision making in environmental management.

The course provides a unique blend of scientific and applied social science approaches to the study and application of environmental management in terrestrial settings. This enables you to become familiar with the wide spectrum of approaches often adopted in the management of both urban and rural environments and environmental resources. This is particularly relevant to the professional sector, which may need to consider issues of ecology/nature conservation, coastal zone management or urban regeneration within a sustainable environmental management context.

This MSc covers key issues and concepts in environmental management, framed around sustainability and management principles, planning and practice. Optional taught modules also offer you a degree of environmental management specialisation in areas of nature conservation management, urban change and coastal management.

The structure of the course is flexible and includes day, evening and weekend teaching and fieldwork sessions. Optional modules, including opportunities for work-based learning and investigating current issues in environmental management, will allow you to build a package that is relevant to your needs, interests and future career aspirations.

You will join a dynamic mix of academics, practitioners and students from across the globe. Building on student and staff experience of professional practice, the MSc aims to challenge academic theory by focusing on real situations. If you have experience of employment in the sector, you will be encouraged to make use of this in your assignments.

Research Environment

The research interests and expertise of the teaching staff cover a broad spectrum of environmental management applications. Staff research expertise is particularly strong in the following areas: nature conservation (including geoconservation), GIS, ecology (plant and insect), coastal management and urban change/regeneration. The curriculum in the taught phase of the MSc reflects the diversity of staff research interests. Guest lecturers and speakers with relevant academic or professional experience contribute to the programme, to give you a wider viewpoint on the nature of environmental management and enable you to see direct links between coursework and professional practice.

An important and popular feature of the MSc is the range of fieldwork activities offered. There are opportunities for local fieldwork, for example in Merseyside’s coastal dune region or in local urban centres. In addition you may have the opportunity to take part in departmental residential fieldwork in the French Alps, Berlin, Malta, Netherlands or Romania. Fieldwork will help you to develop valuable investigative and research skills, as well as being an enjoyable social experience.
