Study Details

MSc, 1yr FT

This exciting MSc in Advanced Computer Science focuses on some of the key research strengths of the School of Computing. It offers a range of advanced topics including Artificial Intelligence, Algorithms and Complexity, Distributed Systems and Scheduling. The course is designed to prepare you for a career using state of the art technologies and techniques or for further research.

Module details

Sample modules include: Advanced Distributed Systems, Algorithm Design, Computational Modelling, Machine Learning, Scheduling, Scientific Computation, Techniques for Knowledge Management, Language and Vision.

You will undertake a substantial research project during the summer months, which offers you the opportunity to explore, in greater depth, a Computer Science topic of your choice. The project will enable you to demonstrate your ability to schedule, research, organise, report and present within the context of a specialist area. Projects are often carried out in conjunction with external companies.

Entry Requirements

A degree equivalent to a UK upper second class honours (2.1) degree or higher in computing or a related discipline with a significant computing component. You are expected to have programming competence, some prior systems development experience and knowledge of data structures and algorithms. Relevant work experience will also be taken into consideration.

Programme Funding

The School offers scholarships for both home/EU and international students.

Home/EU Excellence Scholarships – 3 available
These scholarships are worth £5,000 for full time home/EU fee paying students. The scholarships are awarded on academic achievement/excellence (consideration will only be given to students who have achieved a 1st class (or equivalent) degree).
Any potential student who has been offered a place on any of the postgraduate masters courses within the School is eligible to apply. Applicants must also be liable to pay full fees at the home/EU rate of £10,000. The application deadline is 30 June 2012.

International Excellence Scholarships – 3 available
These scholarships are worth £5,000 for full time international fee paying students. The scholarships are awarded on academic achievement/excellence.
Any potential student who has been offered a place on any of the postgraduate masters courses within the School is eligible to apply. Applicants must also be liable to pay full fees at the international rate of £16,200. The application deadline is 30 June 2012.
