UK to rejoin the EU Horizon Europe research scheme

The Government has negotiated a deal with the UK to rejoin the EU Horizon Europe research scheme.

The news paves the way for a big boost to the UK economy. University research centres are delighted for UK to rejoin the EU Horizon Europe research scheme. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak MP and Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Michelle Donelan MP announced the deal.

From now on the UK will be a fully associated member. This applies for the remainder of the programme, which runs to 2027.

Researchers and university leaders have welcomed the news, which comes after two years of the UK being outside Horizon. This was due to difficulties with the terms agreed for leaving the EU, and it's negotiations post-Brexit over Northern Ireland trade arrangements.

UK researchers can apply for grants and bid to take part in projects under Horizon Europe. As a result, Horizon Europe gives UK companies and research institutions unrivalled opportunities. Leading global work to develop new technologies and research projects, in areas from health to AI.

Continuing support for research

During this period the UK government has been supporting a series of research innovations.

Two years ago UKRI launched the Horizon Europe Guarantee Scheme. This enabled research to continue that was previously funded via the EU. To this end research projects have been able to receive the full value of their funding at their UK host institution.

As of February 2023 UKRI has issued grants worth more than £882 million under the scheme, which was launched in November 2021.
