Course Description

The LLM in Chinese Investment and Business Law offers students an opportunity to gain practical knowledge and skills relating to the conduct of business and investment in China. Students are required to take both the module on Chinese Business law and the module on Chinese Investment and Finance Law, and write a dissertation on Chinese business or financial law and practice. Given the importance of the Chinese economy this programme has been designed for those anticipating a practice that will involve dealing with Chinese financial institutions, investors and the operation of businesses in China. No knowledge of mandarin is required.

Gain an LLM in Chinese Investment and Business Law

The LLM in Chinese Investment and Business Law has been designed by practitioners essentially for practitioners or those intending to enter the business and investment arena of China. Therefore in considering applications we will take account of any relevant practical experience that candidates have had.

This programme has been carefully designed to offer you the opportunity not only to engage in advanced study of the relevant area but also acquire skills that you will find useful in practice.

The programme addresses particular areas of Chinese law that are necessarily important in being able to advise on Chinese investment and business activities.

It is not necessary for students to have any familiarity with the Chinese language, written or spoken. The course is taught by lecturers who have practised in China and have practical knowledge and experience of the relevant issues.

How will I be taught?

To ensure you get the most from your study, modules are taught with a mix of lectures and small group seminars, supported by comprehensive online material. Our lecturers are experts in their relevant subject areas, many having international reputations and current practical experience.

You will receive excellent teaching and support, and will be encouraged to research and study independently with the support of your personal tutor, and when it comes to your dissertation a dedicated supervisor.

How the programme is structured

You can choose to study one year full-time or two years part-time, with the option of two starts in 2013; May 2013, October 2013 and January 2014.

Entry Requirements

To apply for the LLM Chinese Business and Investment Law you must meet the following minimum admissions requirements:

You should hold an equivalent to:

  • Minimum 2.2 law degree
  • Minimum 2.2 degree in law and another subject
  • Minimum 2.2 non-law degree and a pass in the GDL or CPE
  • Minimum 2.2 non-law degree and appropriate/relevant professional experience
  • Non-graduates with appropriate professional experience will also be considered

International students

If your first language is not English you should also have a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Module Details

The modules on Chinese Business Law and Chinese Investment and Finance Law address from a practical stance the relevant Chinese law and policies relating to the operation of general commercial and financial business in China and investment into China.

In addition to the two compulsory modules and a 10,000 word dissertation students are required to select two electives from the optional modules listed.
