The principal entry requirement for either version of the programme is a 2.2 honours (Level 8 – National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) (or better) undergraduate degree in a numerate and relevant discipline. An interview may be part of the admission process.

Software and applications development engineering are among the fastest growing and most dynamic fields of today’s technology. The many career paths for graduates of this programme include web applications development, network design and management, embedded systems development, database design, as well as control and telecommunications engineering.
Since communications systems are constantly changing, the programme aims to give its graduates the skills and knowledge to adapt very quickly to new and changing technologies.
The full-time course runs over three academic semesters, Autumn, Spring and Summer. Taught material is presented in the Autumn and Spring semesters, and the project is completed in the Summer semester. In each of the Autumn and Spring semesters, students study five modules, three of which are compulsory and two of which are "elective", that is, chosen from a selection of available modules.
The part-time course runs over two years. In the first year, students study the compulsory modules, while in the second year they study two elective modules, while also working on their projects. Projects are completed at the end of the summer semester in the second year.
