Our Games Art and Design MA prepares you for creative and technical roles in the fast-growing global games industry.

You’ll gain the advanced artistic, design and production skills needed to create compelling characters, immersive environments and interactive experiences that meet the demands of contemporary game development.

Learning is practice-led, with an emphasis on creating industry-ready outputs and collaborations with peers across different specialisms to reflect a professional games production environment.

The industry placement or research year is a great way to gain valuable professional or academic experience and provides an opportunity for international students to study in the UK for two years instead of one.

Careers in games art and design are diverse and exist within an increasingly international marketplace. Studios range from innovative independent teams to global, multinational developers.

This MA prepares you to enter the industry as a postgraduate-level practitioner, equipped with advanced technical expertise, a refined creative voice and the collaborative skills required to work within multidisciplinary and international teams.

This masters course will set you up for careers including:

game artist – focusing on creating the visual elements of a game, including characters, environments and objects
concept artist – creating initial illustrations and visual ideas for a game’s look and feel.
3D modeller/environment/character artist – developing detailed 3D assets
texture/lighting artist – specialising in making surfaces and locations look realistic within the game engine
animator – bringing characters and objects to life through movement and action
game designer – responsible for the creative vision, gameplay mechanics, story, characters and overall player experience.
level designer – focusing on building the stages and environments where gameplay occurs
narrative designer/writer – crafting the story, dialogue and lore of the game.
technical artist – a hybrid role bridging art and programming, ensuring visual assets are integrated correctly into the game engine and optimised for performance.

The industry also includes roles such as game producer (project and financial management); QA tester (bug-finding, often an entry-level route); UI/UX designer (user interface and experience); and specialist roles in areas including marketing, publishing, journalism and higher education.

With the international games market continuing to expand across Europe, North America and Asia, this MA positions you to pursue opportunities worldwide, whether within established studios or through independent practice.
