Course Description

The course aims to give you an insight into important issues in health economics, helping you face the daily challenges of resource allocation including: an understanding of basic economic concepts; an awareness of the range of approaches available for economic investigation and when to use them; an understanding of how to conduct an economic investigation either alongside a trial or as part of a decision analysis; an understanding of the arguments for and against different types of health care financing and an understanding of how different models of health care provision work.

Health sector reform and budgetary challenges mean health economic skills are in high demand in both public and private sectors. The University of Aberdeen’s Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics will give you an insight into important issues in health economics. You will leave with an understanding of basic economic concepts; awareness of the range of approaches available for economic investigation, and when to use them; understanding of the arguments for and against different types of health care financing; and an understanding of how different models of health care provision work.

Module Details

The course is structured into four modules: Introduction to Economics and Health Economics, Economics Evaluation: Principles and Frameworks, Economic Evaluation: Applications and Policy and Health Care Systems and Policy. On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics – 60 credit points.

Teaching

 

Each module has a seminar attached to it, the seminar is held in Edinburgh. Each seminar is a two day event, the costs of the seminars and overnight stays are included in the course fees. Attendance is compulsory for students living in the UK, overseas students are welcome to attend (at an additional cost).
