Masters Degree Description

Put public health principles into effect in a variety of settings including research, practice, policy, and at the interface of applied research.

With a specific focus on public health economics and policy at a population level, this Master of Public Health (MPH) – Health Economics and Policy is ideal if you are working in health services management, policy and planning housing, transport, community groups or governmental organisations.

The programme’s specialist focus on current public health priorities in low income countries explores the relationship between strategic health planning and policy formation. You will also critically evaluate governmental and market healthcare activities, and the behaviour of consumers and organisations in these healthcare markets. The knowledge you will gain will enable you to apply economic principles to health financing activities and mechanisms using different methods of economic evaluation.

Programme delivery takes place via the virtual learning platform, enabling you to pursue the modules in your own time, within the timeframe of each module. In addition, students on the programme are from a global community with multidisciplinary backgrounds allowing for a global exchange of knowledge.

Entry Requirements

All applications for Master of Public Health (MPH) - Health Economics and Policy are open to UK and international professionals who wish to study online.

As an applicant you should possess: 
• A master’s or bachelor’s in medicine, or a non-health related degree at 2:2 or above, equivalent to a UK degree.

We also welcome applicants without a degree, who will be considered on the basis of holding relevant work experience.

In addition to the above, applicants require a GCSE Grade 4, Grade C, or GCE O Level pass in Mathematics and English, or an equivalent qualification.

All applicants must provide evidence that they have an English language ability equivalent to an IELTS (academic) score of 6.5 (overall) and 7.0 (reading and writing).

If you do not have an IELTS or equivalent certificate, you can take our free online English test to assess your proficiency. You do not need to prove your English ability if you are a national of, or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in, any of these countries.

If you do not currently meet our entry requirements, we offer a 15-credit standalone module, Practising and Promoting Public Health in a Global Context, that can provide a gateway onto the Master of Public Health (MPH) - Health Economics and Policy if completed successfully.

£17,357 for 2025/2026, £17,948 for 2026/2027

Programme Funding

An Executive Scholarship of 15% is available for our June 2026 intake. A UK Scholarship of 20% is available for students residing in the United Kingdom, who enrol on the June 2026 intake of our full master’s awards. A separate application form is not required for a scholarship, as it will be applied once you have received your official offer letter. Please note, scholarships cannot be combined but can be used alongside our Up-front Payment Discount.

The Master of Public Health (Online) – Health Economics and Policy provides a solid foundation for public health research and practice in a variety of public and international settings, helping you to make a real difference.

With the knowledge and skills this programme will give you, you will be able to put economic health principles and policy best practices into effect in a variety of settings including practice, policy, and research. This could also open up senior opportunities in health economics working across high, middle, and low-income countries in a range of sectors, such as health organisations, governmental organisations, charities and NGOs.

Our wider MPH students work for a range of national and international organisations including Action Against Hunger, International Rescue Committee, Medecins Sans Frontiers, Partners in Health, and UNICEF.

Module Details

This programme consists of the following modules. You are required to complete 180 credits to achieve a full Master of Public Health (MPH) - Health Economics and Policy and 120 credits to achieve the postgraduate diploma (PGDip).

• Leading and Managing Health Systems (10 credits)

• Programme and Policy Challenges in Low Income Countries (10 credits)
• Health, Economics, and Governance (10 credits)
• Core research methods module (choose one from):
o Applied Epidemiological Research for Public Health (15 credits) 
o Applied Qualitative Research for Public Health (15 credits)
• Health Inequalities: Integrating Public Health Practice (10 credits)
• Dissertation (60 credits)
