The Mathematics Education MA is for teachers, tutors and others interested in how mathematics is taught and learnt at all levels of education. The course gives students the opportunity to explore issues in mathematics teaching, to consider the theoretical underpinnings, and to carry out a rigorous study of mathematical learning.
Normally applicants are expected to have at least a lower second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, usually in mathematics or in education. Professional experience of teaching or tutoring will also be considered as relevant experience. In addition, applicants should demonstrate commitment and a clearly expressed interest in issues relating to mathematics education, through the submission of an additional specific maths education written task.

The degree prepares you for careers in a wide range of areas. Over 92% of our graduates go on to highly skilled work or further postgraduate level study. Graduates who are already experienced classroom practitioners may go on to work as secondary school heads of mathematics, while others are primary school mathematics leads. Some students use the degree as a stepping stone to securing an internship in their home country. Graduates can also be found working as head teachers, in school inspection, in teacher training and as mathematics education lecturers and researchers. Outside of education, graduates have used the degree to support entry to work in health & social care, financial services and in policy & government (Graduate Outcome Survey 2017-22).
