MSc Nanotechnology

  • DeadlineStudy Details:

    MSc 2 years full-time

Course Description

Nanotechnology focuses on the design and creation of functional materials, structures, devices and systems by directly controlling matter at the nano-level.

Nanotechnology focuses on the design and creation of functional materials, structures, devices and systems by directly controlling matter at the nano-level, as well as the exploitation of novel phenomena and properties occurring at this level. In general, "nano-level" is defined as being smaller than 100 nanometres, depending on the physical and chemical characteristics of the particular system that undergoes quantitative and qualitative changes when the length scale boundary is crossed.

Nanotechnology research and development includes the controlled manipulation of nano-scale structures and their integration into larger material components, systems and architectures. Within these larger scale assemblies, the control and construction of their structure and components continue to be at the nano-level. In nanotechnology, it is essential to have direct control of matter whether between two nano-level objects or between a micro/macro-level object and a nano-level object.

Entry Requirements

The general requirements for admission to a Master programme are:

– A relevant BSc degree* (or equivalent) based on a programme of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete the MSc degree course you intend to pursue at the University of Twente.

– For applicants whose mother tongue is a language other than English:
1.Academic IELTS, overall band score of at least 6.5.
2.TOEFL, internet based (TOEFL-iBT) of at least 90. Please note that we do not accept “Institutional TOEFL” tests except for the one organized and certified by the Netherlands Education Support Office in Jakarta
3. Nationals of the People’s Republic of China please note: A “NUFFIC-certificate” must be sent to the University of Twente as proof of validity of your qualifications. In order to obtain the NUFFIC-certificate you will need to take the IELTS test or an internet based TOEFL (TOEFL-iBT). Note that, as of 1 June 2010, certificates will be issued by the Nuffic in the Hague instead of The Netherlands Education Support Office in Beijing. For more information go to http://www.nesochina.org/chinese-students/information-in-english/nuffic-certificate.
4. Indonesian students should take their TOEFL test at one of the centres recognized by the NEC (Netherlands Education Support Offices) in Indonesia. A list of NEC registered centres in Indonesia can be found on the website: http://www.nesoindonesia.or.id.

Please note that exclusively nationals from the USA, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are exempted from the English test requirement.

– Have sufficient funds to finance your degree.
–  Comply with the extra admission conditions. Some programmes have extra admission conditions, in addition to these more general requirements.

Module Details

The MSc Nanotechnology is a 2-year program (120 ec). In the first year you will be offered a number of specialized courses and practicals, and in the second year you will be doing a 3-month internship and your final MSc thesis assignment.

First year master (M1)
Half of the courses in the first year are core modules which are compulsory. The other 30 EC in the first year allows more freedom in the choice of courses. 15 EC of this part are nanotechnology modules, which need to be selected from the following set:

The other 15 EC are elective courses, and can be selected from the large set of courses that are offered within the MSc programs of Applied Physics, Chemical Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or any other MSc program offered.

Second year master (M2)
In the second year you will be doing an internship (15 EC) within a company working in the field of nanotechnology or within a research group at another university or research institute, active in the field. And the remaining 45 EC you will be conducting a research project within one of the research group at the University of Twente, on a topic within the field of nanotechnology. This you will conclude with a written MSc thesis that you will defend in front of a committee and a public audience.
