Description

This course will train you to be a highly skilled social science researcher able to understand and use appropriate research techniques and become familiar with approaches used by other social scientists.

The course has been designed to include a substantial theoretical and quantitative core. Combined with complementary qualitative training, the programme provides the essential skills for any working researcher.

Study Details:

MRes 1 year full-time

Module Details:

Semester 1

  • Short research apprenticeship project (MRes)
  • Qualitative methods 1
  • Research design and methods for AQM (collaboratively delivered unit)
  • AQM1 experimental and quasi-experimental quantitative methods for social science

Plus one unit from:

  • Research methods in economics
  • Multivariate statistics for use in health contexts
  • Director of Studies approved unit

Semester 2

  • Long research apprenticeship project (MRes)
  • Mathematics and programming skills for social scientists (collaboratively delivered unit)
  • AQM 2 – Advanced modelling techniques for social sciences

Plus one unit from:

  • Business analytics
  • Advanced statistics for use in health contexts
  • Qualitative methods 2
  • Independent research essay
  • Director of Studies approved unit

Summer

  • MRes dissertation
