The course has been designed to include a substantial theoretical and quantitative core. Combined with complementary qualitative training, the course provides the essential skills for any working researcher.

You will be trained in techniques used in the analysis of social science quantitative data. This will enable you to think through how you can use your knowledge and advanced quantitative skills in different contexts, applying them to a variety of problems and specifically in the area of social, educational or political enquiry that most interests you.

Semester 1

  • Short research apprenticeship project (MRes)
  • Qualitative methods 1
  • Research design and methods for AQM (collaboratively delivered unit)
  • AQM1 experimental and quasi-experimental quantitative methods for social science

Plus one unit from:

  • Research methods in economics
  • Director of Studies approved unit

Semester 2

  • Long research apprenticeship project (MRes)
  • Mathematics and programming skills for social scientists (collaboratively delivered unit)
  • AQM 2 – Advanced modelling techniques for social sciences

Plus one unit from:

  • Business analytics
  • Qualitative methods 2
  • Independent research essay
  • Director of Studies approved unit


  • MRes dissertation
