Our Graduate Certificate in Creative Arts Education is for staff in Further Education (FE) or Higher Education (HE) institutions who are new or fairly new to teaching (having less than three years of full-time or equivalent experience), or who are in supporting learning roles. These include learning support assistants, technical support, learning and teaching librarians, artists-in-residence, graduate teaching assistants and PhD students.

This course is registered at our Epsom campus but sessions take place alternately at UCA Epsom and UCA Rochester.

If you’re interested in doing this course but are not employed in a teaching or supporting learning role, it may be possible to meet the entry requirements by doing one day per week of unpaid supporting learning practice with a relevant UCA course or department. If you hold a 2:1 or above BA or Masters degree in a relevant subject and would like to explore this option, please contact the Course Leader to discuss it further. You’ll need to organise and pay for a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check if you’re going to work in our Further Education department.

Course overview:

To apply for this course you must be working in a teaching or supporting learning context for a minimum of one day a week across the year. However, in some instances, this requirement may be provided through one day per week of a voluntary (unpaid) teaching placement with an appropriate course, upon satisfactory interview with the relevant course leader or department manager.

This course is delivered between September and April on alternate Wednesdays (10:00am – 5:00pm) at our Epsom and Rochester campuses in rotation.

The key study topics you’ll explore include:

– How learners learn in general and in creative arts subjects
– How to develop an inclusive approach to teaching or supporting student learning
– How to develop robust assessment, feedback and evaluation practice.

Module Details:

Each unit is assessed through the submission of a range of tasks, whereby theory is used to inform the development of good practice that is appropriate for the discipline or professional support context and level.

In addition, you’ll undertake four peer-supported review activities in which you’ll discuss and reflect on a different aspect of teaching or supporting learning practice, and keep a reflective journal for your personal critique of teaching or supporting learning practice.

Unit 1

Exploring Learning and Teaching

This unit examines:

– FE/HE learning and teaching contexts, including institutional, national and international
– Teaching or supporting learning roles, responsibilities, the notions of dual professionalism and professional boundaries
– Planning and managing effective learning and teaching
– How learners learn, both in creative arts contexts and in general through, for example, experiential, problem-based and work-based learning and participation in communities of practice
– How to motivate learners and the factors that inhibit learning
– Your own knowledge, skills and continuing professional development needs.

Unit 2

Designing and Delivering an Inclusive Curriculum

This unit examines:

– Curriculum design and delivery to support the learning of a diverse student body
– The relevant national and institutional equality and inclusivity context
– Theories and principles of learning and communication that can be applied to promote inclusive learning
– Advice, guidance and support which might be provided by institutions
– Comparisons of international approaches to learning in the creative arts, and the notion of context appropriate teaching or supporting learning.

Unit 3

Assessment, Feedback and Evaluation

This unit examines:

– The principles of effective assessment, feedback and evaluation in creative arts disciplines and professional services
– A range of assessment and feedback methods and practices
– The relationship between curriculum design, session planning and delivery and assessment and feedback
– Writing and using aims, learning outcomes and assessment criteria appropriate to own present or future role
– How to evaluate performance in own present or future role for example through peer-supported review
– The relationship between assessment, feedback and evaluation to quality assurance and quality enhancement principles and practices.

Student Destinations

A successful career in teaching or supporting learning in FE and HE contexts requires three key ingredients. These include: a subject discipline qualification (preferably at Masters level), significant professional art and design or professional support practice, and a teaching qualification.

Those working in the FE sector will have partially completed the mandatory content of the FE and Skills Sector Diploma in Education and Training, but will need to progress on to and complete the Post Graduate Certificate to cover the entire mandatory content.

Entry Requirements

BA (Hons) degree (normally a first-class/upper second/equivalent), or an international equivalent in a relevant discipline

Less than three years’ (full-time equivalent) teaching experience

One day a week* or equivalent (minimum) of work in a teaching/supporting learning role at UCA or another further education and skills and/or higher education establishment. Applicants working at UCA (including sessional staff) must, in the first instance, seek approval of their line manager to do the course. Line manager and Head of School or Department sign-off will subsequently be needed

GCSE English at grade C or above, or equivalent (Mathematics Level 2 for entry to the course isn’t needed, but applicants should be aware that they may need this qualification to gain employment in the further education and skills sector).

No formal portfolio is required for this course. We’ll require you to attend an Applicant Day which will include an interview. This will also give you the opportunity to visit us, meet the course team and see the facilities. If you wish to bring work for discussion at your interview, you’re welcome to do so.
