Course Description

Our Managing the Environment Master’s Degree could be the passport to your new career. This exciting new Masters programme has been designed to meet the challenges of the future and will provide you with the vocational and professional skills needed for the career you have always wanted.

To prepare you for these challenges we have designed an Master’s programme with a core of key management skills which you then tailor to your own needs and interests by following one of our five specialist pathways:

  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Marine and Freshwater Systems
  • Bioenergy and Environmental Change
  • Habitat Restoration and Conservation

Entry Requirements

Good Undergraduate degree 2.2 (UK) (or above) equating to a mark of 56.5 or above in a related subject. European and International applicants can find their grade equivalence on our website. Those who are not graduates must satisfy the university that they are of the required academic standard to pursue postgraduate study.

English Language Requirements: If you have a Bachelor’s degree from a UK University, you do not need to take an English proficiency test. Non-native English speakers who do not meet this requirement must take a University-recognised test of academic English language proficiency.

Module Details

Pathways

Students complete a suite of modules that are core to all the Managing the Environment Masters courses:

  • Professional Skills in Managing the environment
  • EIA Theory and Practice
  • Statistics for Experimental Scientists
  • Issues & Developments in Managing the Environment
  • An Introduction to Environmental Law
  • Critical Evaluation in Environmental Management

The Environmental Sustainability pathway offers students vocational skills in sustainability analysis, environmental and carbon auditing plus environmental impact assessment. Our students interact with professional consultants and develop vocational skills that are directly transferable to a wide range of working environments. Students acquire practical, ‘field’ experience and develop skills targeted for employment in this Environmental sector.

Pathway specific modules including a four month research dissertation:

  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Sustainability in Practice
  • Research Dissertation

Marine and Freshwater Systems
Located at the heart of Cardigan Bay, near the confluence of the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol, Aberystwyth represents the ideal location for a Marine and Freshwater Masters course. This experiential pathway involves coastal surveying in Cardigan bay and Skomer island and is taught by top ranking internationally recognised researchers (and qualified divers) and professionals. We provide our students with world-class experience and training, ensuring that they make critical links and career networks both in the UK and abroad.

  • Sampling Techniques in Practice
  • Management in Practice – Marine and Freshwater Systems
  • Research Dissertation

Bioenergy and Environmental Change

The Bioenergy and Environmental Change pathway was developed in direct response to the Energy sectors imminent and future need for graduates with Green energy skills. At IBERS we are world leaders in the green energy development sector and attract students from across the globe. This is a rapidly emerging area of employment and managing land for energy is a significant growth area as Governments throughout the world seek to meet their Sustainability and Climate Change targets.

At IBERS Aberystwyth we have one of the largest groupings of scientists active in biorenewables in Europe with complete coverage of the research pipeline in a single institution. This pathway involves industrial case studies where you will interact with consultants and environmental professionals.

Habitat Restoration and Conservation

IBERS has a strong internationally recognised research background in Habitat Restoration and Conservation. We conduct research both in the UK and abroad and our MSc students are integrate into this research environment. There is an urgency to train the new generation of practitioners in this area as habitat destruction (via human development) represents the most serious threat to biodiversity on the planet.

Students benefit from our ideal coastal location which lies between the Cambrian and Snowdonia mountain ranges in Wales. The course is taught by internationally recognised researchers, consultants and professional conservationists. Altogether we provide our students with world class experience and ensure that students make those all important links and career networks both in the UK and abroad.

This pathway offers the exciting option of undertaking up to three months in Swedish Lapland (limited places).

  • Sampling Techniques in Practice
  • Management in Practice –Terrestrial systems (based either at Abisko Scientific Research Station in Swedish Lapland or in Mid –Wales).
