    MA 2 years full-time, 120 ECTS, Aalborg

Course Description

Aalborg University offers a two year (four semesters) Master of Social Science programme in European Studies. The focus is on European integration, and the courses are in English.

The programme is open to Danish and foreign students with a B.S. or B.A. degree in social science.

European Intetegration – subjects of your own interest

We offer an innovative Master’s programme on European Integration, understood in a wide sense. The courses cover a wide range of issues in this context, but most of the time our students can work independently on special subjects of their interest, in group work, but also individually. A simulation game is also part of the programme. The many common activities make it easy to find friends.

Problem-based learning in a colourful international milieu

We believe in interdisciplinarity and problem-based, active learning to a very high extent. An internship at e.g. an EU institution is also part of the programme, assuring a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge. Together with our neighbouring program of Development and International Relations, with whom we cooperate on many fields, we are part of a colourful international milieu, also on the side of the teachers. Our students thereby also learn to work in international teams, something which many employers appreciateThe Master’s Programme in European Studies aims to give students a theoretical knowledge of economic and political developments in Europe and insights into the institutions and processes of the European Union. Students will also improve their ability to analyze economic, social, cultural or political aspects of developments in Europe within an interdisciplinary context.

Guest Student Programme

Students may wish to join us for a half year (30 ECTS) following either the first semester of the Master’s degree, or alternatively the second semester. Students wishing to join the second semester, which rebuilds on knowledge of the European Union and its policies and of International Relations taught in the first semester, should possess a similar knowledge at entry, possibly through previous European Studies or Political Science courses. Please note the English skills requirements of the courses.

Entry Requirements

Although International Relations, European Studies is an interdisciplinary study, a social science background is essential. While a bachelor’s degree in a social science for instance economics, international relations, or political science is directly relevant, other degrees such as history, geography, law or anthropology are equally qualified for admission.

Foreign students are required to pass one of the English proficiency tests accepted by Aalborg University. These are IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge ESOL.The test has to be less than two years old, otherwise it will not be accepted as valid. Danish students must have no less than a B-level in English.

You do not have to submit an English test if one of the following criteria applies to you:

  • You have a complete bachelor degree done in English from either Australia, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, USA, New Zealand, South Africa or Canada

  • You have a complete bachelor degree done in English from a Danish University.

Student Destinations

In the ES Programme you have the opportunity to become a dynamic practitioner in your field, whether your interests are strategic, managerial, policy-related, or all of the above.

As a comprehensive study undertaken by the Career Centre of the university revealed, our graduates have been successful entrants on the labour market, finding relevant positions in numerous fields, in the public sector and in private companies. This certainly also reflects the centrality, which matters of European integration have acquired in most aspects of society.
