The programme provides you with the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the physiological, nutritional and metabolic demands of exercise and training, and their implications for participation in sport and for the maintenance of good health.

Programme information

This course is designed for graduates possessing a good degree in sports science or other relevant biological science, and offers study at a high level in the defined areas, with emphasis on the research literature and hands-on experience of traditional and novel laboratory techniques. It is an excellent basis for further research or for a career in exercise physiology support in both sport and health settings.

Core study areas include physiology of endurance sport, sport and exercise nutrition, exercise and immunology, vocational skills in exercise physiology, neuromuscular function, quantitative research, current research in exercise physiology, laboratory techniques in sport and exercise physiology, and a research project where you have the opportunity to  complete a research study under the supervision of the Academic Staff which could include the areas of muscle physiology, cardiovascular physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, risk factors for Chronic Diseases, exercise and appetite, immunology,  physiological response to exercise in children and disability sport. 

This programme is available for part-time applicants who have a prearranged, confirmed placement (eg with the Loughborough University Sports Development Centre, Sport National Governing Body, English Institute of Sport etc).

Module Details:

Physiology of Endurance Performance (Compulsory)

-understand the physiology of the body systems that underpin the capacity for exercise including the basis of intervention/training strategies to enhance endurance performance,  the basis of fatigue and determinants of performance in events requiring endurance and repetitive high intensity work and to understand the physiological characteristics of elite athletes in particular sports.
Current Research in Exercise Physiology (Compulsory)
-gain a critical understanding of the most recent research in the physiology of exercise and sport and its possible application to the performance, recovery or health of the athlete.

Laboratory Techniques in Exercise Physiology (Compulsory)
-develop competency in a wide range of research techniques (exercise tests, biochemistry, calibration, data handling) for the study of human physiology during exercise to prepare students to undertake laboratory-based research in these areas.

Quantitative Research Methods (Compulsory)
– gain a critical understanding and appreciation of statistical theory and its application in sport, exercise and health sciences;
– gain a working knowledge of common statistical procedures in sport, exercise and health sciences research.

Exercise and immunology (Optional)
 -evaluate the evidence concerning the influence of exercise on immune function and infection risk.
-Study the relationship between training and respiratory infection risk, how exercise affects immune defence mechanisms, how nutritional interventions may help to reduce infection risks in athletes and how this relationship can be applied to the health of the general population.

Vocational Skills in Exercise Physiology (Optional)
-develop a systematic understanding of the framework within which the exercise physiology operates within a sport-science or clinical setting;
-critically appreciate professional issues and the role of the exercise physiologist.

Sport and Exercise Nutrition (Optional)
-examine the fundamental principles of human nutrition and metabolism and how exercise and sport influence nutrient needs and eating strategies

Neuromuscular Function (Optional)
-develop understanding of neuromuscular function from the micro to applied whole human body level using principles of biomechanics and muscle physiology, and gain practical skills in investigating neuromuscular function at the whole body level.

Research Project (Compulsory)
-plan and carry out an original research study utilising knowledge gained from other modules on the M.Sc. programme.

Previous students have gone on to work in many high profile sports settings, including the English Institute of Sport, Premiership football clubs, English and Wales Cricket board, England Rugby, British Swimming, British Triathlon, British Cycling, UK Athletics, UK Sport, in addition to working in the NHS, Spire, Nuffield Health.

Many students also go on to further study (PhD, Postgraduate Medicine, Physiotherapy)
