Course Description

The masters program in Human Centred Informatics at Aalborg University, Denmark, focus on the use and design of IT, and the relations between humans and IT. Also, we look at how humans and organizational communication is being developed with the use of IT systems and the challenges, limitations and ethical concerns that follow.

From a broad perspective, the masters program in Human Centred Informatics is concerned with the adaptation of IT-systems to suit human use in both personal and professional use, and in a variety of contexts. As a student, you will learn to develop and execute studies that contribute to the knowledge of the functional interplay between human behaviour and though, organizational contexts and IT-systems, didactics, social processes, language and learning, artificial intelligence, etc.

As a student at the masters program in Human Centred Informatics, your will have the opportunity to specialise your studies to concern specific sectors, organizations or situations, giving you specialized knowledge about your subject. The goal is to provide you with the desired skills and knowledge of how the subjects mentioned above, relate to the specialized context of your choosing, creating your personalized educational profile.

Thus, your theoretical, analytical and developing skills will be improved in the following domains:

  • IT, learning and cooperation
  • Knowledge and formalization
  • Artificial intelligence
  • The design of user interfaces
  • System development
  • Human-computer-interaction (HCI)

Please note, that this master’s program is offered to international students, and thus, al teachings will be in English.

The following AAU bachelor degrees provide applicants access to the masters program in Human Centred Informatics 

  • Humanistic Informatics (Interactive Digital Media, Human centered informatics and Communications)
  • Computer Science
  • Informatics
  • Information Technology
  • Medialogy

Applications with similar Danish or foreign educations at a similar level can be accepted pending the approval of the storyboard of Humanistic Informatics (Humanistisk Informatik). If your application lists and education that does not grant you direct access to the masters program, The Study Office will relay you application to the respective storyboard.

The Storyboard cannot grant a pre-evaluation of students that do not meet the requirements. This means, that applications will only be reviewed upon final application to the masters program.

Student Destinations

Students of Human Centred Informatics are employed in both private and public companies or organizations, and in many different parts of these companies, depending on the focus of your studies and your interests.

More often than not, you will be working with overcoming barriers that IT creates, and solving IT-problems through research and development of communication and or communications-technology.

Most jobdescriptions include:

giving you a broad range of functions but key knowledge into the interplay between humans and technology.

Module Details

The masters program in Human Centred Informatics is a two-year program divided into four semesters beginning roughly September 1st, and February 1st. You will be able to tone or tailor your education throughput most of the four semesters, with selections in courses, workshops and the subject of the main term paper. This gives you the best possible way of tailoring the education you will be given to interests you have. The paragraph below will provide you with a quick overview of the individual semesters as a whole..

The 7th semester is centred on the design and use of IT. This semester will focus on the theoretical and methodical aspects of IT, as well as aspects of cooperation, design and development. This semester will focus on a problem-based approach, meaning that student will, in groups or by them selves, write a semester paper on a subject of their choosing, that relates to the overall frame of the semester. As a student, you will have courses in ICT, Learning and Collaboration, Design Theory and Methodology and Sustainable ICT Development.

The 8th semester is cantered on “ICT Systems: Use and Meaning”. Where students will focus on theoretical and methodical aspects of knowledge and formalization in relation to ICT and human-computer-interaction (HCI). As on the previous semester, students will employ a problem-based approach to courses such as “Human-Computer-Interaction”, “ICT Systems: Use an Meaning” and “Knowledge and Formalization”.

The 9th semester will focus on an internship in a national or international context. Students are encouraged to apply as interns at national or international companies or organization, putting their knowledge into practice. This semester’s term paper will be on the reflections this work has given you.

The 10th and final semester will be focussed on your masters thesis.
