Course Description

The master program in Information Technology (Information Architecture) at Aalborg University, Denmark, focuses on communication and interaction through websites, social networks, portals and e-learning systems. As a student, you will learn to design, developed and analyze information systems, while understanding the user, the use context and the technological limitations. This enables you to take part as a design or a project-manager in the design process.

As making information assessable online is a crucial part of modern life, students in the masters program in Information Technology (Information Architecture), will also focus on making information available, assessable and interactive to vide array of users and in many use contexts. As a student, you will be working on creating coherence between content, form, presentation and organization of content both online and in other it-systems, ensuring ease of use for the users of these systems, while meeting the requirement set be the context, organization, etc.

The masters program in Information Technology (Information Architecture) is concerned with computer mediated communications, and as such usability and user-centred-development are keywords in our field of study. This enables you to develop, plan and execute studies that combine technology, design and human factors, providing knowledge into the field of user driven innovation.

This will also enable you to design readily understandable and effective information architecture that considers the human use of your designs, in terms of e.g. human reason, searching and navigation. As such, you will learn methods of creating user centered design and development, that supports human communication, interaction and understanding.

Please note, that this master’s programme is offered to international students, and thus, al teachings will be in English.

Entry Requirements

The following AAU bachelor degrees provide applicants access to The master program in Information Technology (Information Architecture)

  • Humanistic Informatics (Interactive Digital Media, Human centered informatics and Communications)
  • Danish in combination with a tilvagsfag
  • English – Language and International Studies
  • International business Communication (English, French, Spanish or German)
  • Informatics

Applications with similar Danish or foreign educations at a similar level, can be accepted pending the approval of the Studyboard of Humanistic Informatics (Humanistisk Informatik). If your application lists and education that does not grant you direct access to the masters program, The Study Office will relay you application to the respective studyboard.

The Studyboard cannot grant a pre-evaluation of students that do not meet the requirements. Therefore, applications will only be reviewed upon final application to the masters program.

All students that apply in time and meet the specified requirements, are accepted to the program.

Student Destinations

Information architects are employed in both private and public companies or organizations, and most often in the communications, IT og Human Relations-department where they develop and maintain communication and/or information-systems. Many Information architects bear the title of project lead.

Module Details

The masters program in Information Technology (Information Architecture) is problem and result based, and as such you will be working with both a theoretical and practical approach, having a human-centred and technological perspective. You will be working with disciplines such as rhetoric, communication, information ecology and user centred design, to better understand and work with users. You will lean content management systems (CMS), search technology and system development, information processing, media strategies and project management in order to plan, develop and implement information architecture in a multimodal context.

More often that not, student will be working in groups with specific design tasks and projects, in cooperation with partners in both private companies and public organizations that will evaluate your results and provide feedback.

The masters program in Information Technology (Information Architecture) is divided into two separate programs; the basic programme and the programme with focus on Persuasive Design. The Persuasive Design-program, is then offered as both a regular and as an Elite program.
