Course Description

Innovation, Knowledge and Entrepreneurial Dynamics (MIKE-B) at Aalborg University is a two-year full time international MSc specialization programme for Degree Students and Guest/Exchange Students. The MIKE-B programme leads to a Master Degree in Economics and Business Administration with specialization in Innovation, Knowledge and Entrepreneurial Dynamics. MIKE-B enrols both Danish and international students.

The programme focuses on the relationship between knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurial dynamics in a world characterised by globalisation, rapid change and uncertainty. The programme gives the students an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and analytical capability to define and implement sustainable strategies for technological change and global positioning. A special focus is put on theories, methods, and tools supporting knowledge management and innovation in relation to both existing firms (intrepreneurship) and in relation to the establishing of new knowledge based firms (entrepreneurship).

  • How is knowledge diffused in firms and networks?
  • How do different types of firms organise their innovation activities?
  • Globalisation as a challenge for the Danish innovation system?
  • How can further interaction between universities and industry be stimulated?
  • How do industrial clusters emerge?
  • Innovation and sustainable development as an integrated part of firm strategies
  • What kind of policy is needed to stimulate sustainable innovation and firm strategies?

Entry Requirements

In order to be admitted to the MIKE-B programme the applicant must have successfully completed a bachelor degree in Business Economics or Business Administration. Alternatively students with a bachelor degree in another filed combined with significant coursework in business economics or with some relevant practical experience can be enrolled based on an individual assessment.

Foreign students are required to pass one of the English proficiency tests accepted by Aalborg University. These are IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge ESOL.The test has to be less than two years old, otherwise it will not be accepted as valid. Danish students must have no less than a B-level in English.

You do not have to submit an English test if one of the following criteria applies to you: 

  • You have a complete bachelor degree done in English from either Australia, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, USA, New Zealand, South Africa or Canada.
  • You have a complete bachelor degree done in English from a Danish University.

You will have obtained a specific capability to analyse dynamic processes and to find relevant solutions to essential problems.

The MIKE-B programme prepares you to undertake a career in

•Regulatory bodies at the local, regional, national, and international level (municipalities, regional bodies, Ministries of Trade, Industry, Science and Technology, etc.)
•National or international organisations (for instance labour market organisations, industrial associations, European Commission, OECD, the World Bank)
•National or international research institutions and universities (as a Ph.d.-student or research fellow)

Module Details

The programme in Innovation, Knowledge and Entrepreneurial Dynamics (MIKE-B) is divided into four semesters of five month each. The first two semesters are devoted to studies at Aalborg University. The third term offers an opportunity for internship or study abroad as well as continued study at Aalborg University. In the fourth semester students write their Master’s thesis.

The programme consists of courses, seminars and project work. The project work gives a good opportunity to reflect and use the theories, methods and tools presented in the courses and seminars. Parts of the activities (courses, seminars, and project work) will be organised as joint activities together with the ‘sister programme’ within Economics: Innovation, Knowledge and Economic Dynamics (MIKE-E), other parts of the activities (especially courses in tools and methods) are organised as separate activities within each programme.
