Course Description

The Master of Environmental and Energy Management programme (often referred to as ‘MEEM’) is a one-year fulltime programme offered by CSTM – the Twente Centre for Studies in Technology and Sustainable Development at the University of Twente. From 2000 until now, many people have participated in the programme, representing around 40 nationalities.

The Master of Environmental and Energy management deals with the various aspects involved in public or private environmental and energy management. The aim of the programme is to prepare future decision-makers in companies, government and non-governmental organisations to analyse and act in an environmentally pro-active way when making decisions about policy, production and resource utilisation. It wants to enlarge the scope of knowledge and skills of participants, contributing to capacity building in the field of sustainable development.

The Master programme ‘Environmental and Energy Management’ aims to prepare future decision-makers in companies, government and non-governmental organisations for analysing and acting in an environmentally pro-active way when making decisions about policy, production and resource utilisation. The programme is intended for postgraduates with a clear affinity for management and/or technology, either as a result of their education or of their working experience, as well as for decision-makers in companies, government and non-governmental organisations who wish to become environmental and energy specialists.

Graduates will be able to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate environmental and energy management programmes, policies and projects. Participants will be employed by large companies in the private sector, become a consultant for large, small and medium sized enterprises, or will work for governmental or non-governmental organisations. In the public sector, national public authorities, provinces, larger municipalities and water authorities will employ them.

The Master programme ‘Environmental and Energy Management’ has a total workload of 65 European credits.

Entry Requirements

In order to qualify for participation in the Master programme Environmental and Energy Management, applicants should fulfil the following requirements:

– have at least a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline in the natural, technical, environmental or social sciences (if applicable, 2nd class or higher). For more details, see next section.
– work experience is recommended or, depending on disciplinary background, required (see next section)
– have a basic understanding of chemistry (high school level)
– have excellent communication skills and a very good understanding of the English language
– demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English by means of a minimum score of 6.5 on the Academic IELTS test. Internet based TOEFL-iBT scores are also accepted. The required minimum score for admission is 90.

Module Details

The programme has three main parts. First, there is a period with course work of about 21 weeks. Second, there is a case study period of about 8 weeks, and finally a research project of about 16 weeks. Research project preparations already start during the course work period in the course ‘Academic Research skills’ for which, amongst other, students need to write the proposal for their final research project.

The course work can be categorised around three main themes:
– Management (business administration)
– Governance and Law
– Technology (mainly in a contextual sense).
 
Next to the courses on the three themes, courses or course elements are included that are more integrative in nature, and also workshops / courses concerned with academic research and professional skills. In general, there are many interlinks between courses.  Full details can be found at
