Course Description

The Media, Culture & Society MSc explores how media interacts with and shapes contemporary culture and society. It offers unique interdisciplinary study combining social sciences and arts approaches in the vibrant cultural and media hub of Glasgow.

  • One-third of the degree is based on choice of an independent dissertation or a collaborative group project.

  • This programme addresses urgent issues of our age: power, inequality, identity politics, trust and journalism, surveillance capitalism, privacy, risk and security, AI, war and conflict, datafication, hate-speech and trolling, memory and the future, the Coronavirus global pandemic.

  • Taught by international experts from the Glasgow Media Group, Glasgow Social and Digital Change Group, and talks from key international scholars and industry thinkers including artists, film-makers, archivists, curators, NGOs and photojournalists.

Entry Requirements

2.1 Honours degree or non-UK equivalent (e.g. a GPA of 3.0 or above) in: Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Journalism Studies, Sociology, History, Memory Studies, Communication Studies, Organisation Studies, War Studies or related social sciences or arts subject area.

Student Destinations

The programme equips students with key interdisciplinary research skills to aid employability and advancement in the media, cultural and communication sectors (public sector, third sector, NGOs, voluntary organisations, government bodies, media and cultural organisations).

A working knowledge of contemporary media and communications is also desirable in areas as diverse as health, education and finance.
