Course Description

Contemporary electronic music and sonic art is making increasing use of innovative audio software and interface possibilities to produce exciting and engaging productions, installations and performances. We will give you the skills to meet both the technical and creative challenges of producing custom software and hardware solutions for electronic music and sonic art applications.If you are interested in developing cutting-edge technologies used in the production and performance of electronic music and sonic art then our course has been designed for you. You will create interactive systems in Max/MSP, explore sensor-based interfaces and develop your skills in sound creation, manipulation and composition.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Music, Music Production or Audio Technology, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; all applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements.

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Module Details

Exposes the student to a high-level multi-disciplinary collaborative working environment and enables them to develop their skill in complex brief-fulfilment in a collaborative environment.

This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills allowing you to develop audio-based artefacts in the fields of electro-acoustic music, sonic art and sound design.

This module will equip students with critical tools for understanding and developing computer performance practice in the fields of contemporary electronic music.

This module will enable you to consider a range of approaches to interactive and reactive system design, equipping you with key concepts, artistic approaches and technical skills.

This module aims to develop your awareness of the methods and skills which are required in order to carry out research into the ideas and practice of music technology.

This is an opportunity to work closely with your tutors, researching and applying current theory and practice alongside a learning plan that meets your own aims and objectives.

The final project provides an opportunity for you to engage in research and advanced practice in an area of your own choice, that is appropriate to the course.

Study contemporary approaches to orchestration and arrangement of music for the moving image and create scores and MIDI realisations to a professional standard.

Examine the techniques and methods employed in electroacoustic composition and apply your findings to create an original composition.

Evaluate the relationships between sound, music, and image, as well as devising and creating examples of audio-visual media to a professional standard.
