Approximately 20% of children in England have special education needs. In all schools in England, as well as most schools around the world, the role of a Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO) is integral to ensuring good outcomes for pupils with special education needs (SEN).
Children with SEN have more difficulty learning or accessing education than most children of the same age. The nature of a child’s special needs vary and can include issues relating to behaviour, communication and interaction, cognition and learning, emotional or social development and sensory or physical needs.
If you are a newly appointed SENCO or an existing teacher who is new to the SENCO role, you will be required to complete The National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination. We have developed an exceptional programme leading to this national award in collaboration with academics and expert practitioners. At the start of the module you will do a thorough self-evaluation to identify gaps in your knowledge and understanding and to assess what direction your learning will take based on your own experience and your work place needs. In this way we have developed a truly flexible, work based and practical module for all SEN professionals.
This is one of very few courses for the National Award that is delivered fully via distance learning. We use a virtual learning environment which enables you to connect and share your experiences with other SEN professionals, both in the UK and abroad, and we encourage you to collaborate with the other students and your school in order to get the most from this qualification.
