MSc Sport & Exercise Physiology

Course Description

If you are already working, or you intend to work, in the field of sport and exercise physiology or related fields, this course will provide you with the opportunity to upgrade your professional expertise. You will study core modules in the different aspects of sport and exercise physiology, as well as research methods, research into practice and a major independent study related to your specific interests in sport and exercise physiology.

You will be able to choose one option from a range of other discipline-based modules in sport and exercise science including biomechanics, nutrition and psychology. Once enrolled on the course you will have the opportunity to apply for a range of sport science internships. If you are successful these roles would provide you with an opportunity to gain experience in applied sport science working under supervision with the University’s sports teams, sporting partners and elite performers, whilst studying for a Masters degree.

January entrants please note: in order to complete 12 months of academic study delivered in University term time, the total length of your programme will be 18 months to include recognised University vacation periods.

Entry Requirements

Requirements: Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Sports Science, Exercise Science, Physical Education, Human Physiology, Biochemistry, Physical Sciences, Physics, Physiotherapy, Medicine or Sports Therapy, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment.

 

English Language Requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no skills below 6.0, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Module Details

Core Modules

Research Methods (20 credits)

This module focuses on the design of research projects as a way of answering questions and solving ‘real world’ problems in a reliable and valid manner.

Research & Professional Practice (20 credits)

This modules aims to develop an understanding of how to apply research into a range of professional contexts associated with sport and exercise science.

Major Independent Study (60 credits)

You will complete a research project of your choosing under the supervision of a member of academic staff. Ideally you will aim to produce research of a publishable quality.

Option Modules

Clinical Exercise Testing & Prescription (20 credits)

Examine the application of exercise testing and prescription primarily from a pathophysiological perspective in different clinical populations. You’ll evaluate the contribution of exercise testing to diagnosis and prognosis for different chronic conditions.

Physiology & Biochemistry for Performance (20 credits)

Gain a critical understanding of the metabolic and endocrine responses to different types of exercise, their time course and scope for training and detraining adaptations.

Physiology of Sports Performance (20 credits)

Consider the acute physiological responses to exercise and chronic physiological adaptations to training, with a detailed evaluation of contemporary exercise testing and prescription methods.

Essentials of Sport & Exercise Physiology (20 credits)

Develop a comprehensive knowledge and critical understanding of the structure and function of the main human systems during exercise.
