Course Description

Our MA Translation and Interpreting Studies course aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills you’ll need for a career in translation, or in other professions that require intercultural communication.

You’ll choose from a range of specialisations, including commercial translation, audio-visual translation, scientific and technical translation, literary translation, translation project management and translating for international organisations, translating into or out of English and any other language.

We provide training in the use of translation technologies.

Options are available in consecutive interpreting and public service interpreting.

We also offer research-intensive, optional units in translation and interpreting studies and cross-cultural pragmatics for those who wish to prepare for doctoral study in translation or interpreting studies.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold a good, Upper Second Class Honours degree, or its overseas equivalent, normally in a relevant subject.

Students may study translation practice-based units in between English and any other language. Interpreting units (Consecutive Interpreting and Public Service Interpreting) are available in a limited number of languages with English: Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, German (available for Consecutive Interpreting only), French and Spanish. In addition to native proficiency in one language, applicants must have proficiency in at least one further language at a level that is equivalent to C1 or C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages . One of these two languages must be English. Applicants may work with a third or fourth language if their proficiency is also at the level of C1 or higher. Please contact us for further guidance.
