MSc & PG Diploma 2-5yrs and PG Certificate 1-5yrs

This programme provides you with the knowledge and skills to address diverse public health issues in low-, middle- and high-income environments. The diverse curriculum allows you to opt for a broad range of knowledge by taking the general pathway or specialise in one of three streams: Environment and Health, Health Promotion or Health Services Management.

The programme will enable you to contribute to the health of populations, communities and disadvantaged groups. By the end, you should be able to apply the core disciplines of public health (statistics, epidemiology, health economics and social research) to real world health problems.

Who is it for?

This programme will benefit you if you wish to deepen your understanding of public health issues and/or boost your career development opportunities. Many students are existing health professionals in service or policy roles. Others work in development, community services, government, research or teaching.

Credits awarded

Credits are awarded to all modules (10 credits for each core module, 15 credits for elective modules) and the project (MSc only – 45 credits) on successful completion. To obtain a qualification, the following credits must be gained:

  • PG Certificate – 60 credits
  • PG Diploma – 120 credits
  • MSc – 180 credits

Compulsory core modules

  • Basic Epidemiology
  • Basic Statistics for Public Health and Policy
  • Introduction to Health Economics
  • Principles of Social Research


The PG Certificate comprises the four compulsory core modules and two further core modules. The PG Diploma comprises the compulsory core modules, two further core modules plus four elective modules. The MSc consists of the compulsory core modules, a stream-specific core module and one further core module, plus either five elective modules and a project report or eight elective modules. To gain an MSc in a particular stream, students must complete the relevant compulsory module for that stream.

Entry Requirements

A second-class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a subject appropriate to the programme. Additionally, applicants should have a minimum of one year’s work experience.
