Study Details

MA 1 year full-time, 3 years part-time

The MA Education is designed to enhance your professional practice and help you make improvements which will make a positive difference either within the classroom or your particular work environment.

Highly flexible, it caters for educators with a diverse range of experience, development needs, and study requirements. It is suitable for teachers, those in leadership or policy-making roles, and other practitioners working in education or related settings.

You may choose an individually constructed programme, or follow a specialist route which may be reflected in your degree title. You may study full-time or part-time, and choose to study on campus or via blended or distance learning. You may also study single modules through our Professional Development in Education programme.

Module details

You must take 180 credits in total to qualify with an MA qualification.

To qualify with the degree title MA Education: Mathematics, you will need to take a minimum of 60 credits in the specialist area, usually chosen from the taught modules below, and write a dissertation on a topic relating to this specialism.

  • EFPM319 Issues in theory & practice in mathematics education 30 Distance learning or blended learning

A further 60 credits can be chosen from our full range of modules.

Entry Requirements

The MA in Education and its constituent parts are normally offered to qualified professionals (usually in Education) and those with equivalent. Applicants shall normally hold a good first degree UK Upper Second Class Honours or above, or Masters level credits (eg. PGCE) in a relevant discipline (see individual specialism/module requirements).  In addition to this, candidates should also have at least 3 months (or part time equivalent) relevant experience of working in an educational or other relevant setting (see individual specialism/module requirements).  

Please note, any applicant who is a trained teacher is assumed to have gained the necessary 3 months' experience during their training. All applicants must meet the minimum English Language requirements for postgraduate study. 

Some full-time specialisms require Disclosure & Barring Service checks and some modules require specific experience and/or current practice. Recent Exeter PGCE graduates can gain accelerated entry to the MA in Education. 

In addition to the meeting the entry requirements for the MA Education, you will usually need at least three months experience of teaching mathematics in a school, or similar educational environment, including involvement in the development of technology.
