Sport and Exercise Medicine MSc

Study Details

MSc 3 years part time

This distinctive new Masters course will help meet the increasing national demand for qualified Sport & Exercise Medicine (SEM) practitioners, in both private and NHS practice. Both Part-Time (this year) and Full-Time (next year) options are available, emphasising flexibility around other work commitments.

The course is designed to train enthusiastic professionals wishing to pursue a career in the relatively new discipline of sports and exercise medicine (SEM).
We adopt a blended learning approach with extensive on-line resources, practice-based learning with regular university days, a variety of assessment types, and applied research project topics. The course is interdisciplinary in nature, and will equip students to work in teams of professionals with complementary expertise (e.g. strength and conditioning, team coaches, physiotherapists, acute injury settings).
A wide range of supervised experience is available via placements at NHS Bradford & Airedale MSK clinics; York City FC, Leeds United FC, Hull City FC; options also include GB Swimming, GB Basketball etc.

  • This course offers a number of unique opportunities, arising from the largest concentration of UK SEM consultants and trainees in the Yorkshire region, providing experienced practitioner training and access to local MSK clinics.
  • Major sporting clubs and organisations will provide intense pitch-side placements, and high quality ‘learning in context’, with an emphasis on practical experience. Essential placements are provided, and a contact list for voluntary additional experience.
  • You will benefit from academic support from staff in Sport and Exercise Sciences (Number 1 in the UK for ‘world-leading’ research in the area of sport and exercise sciences from REF 2014).
  • By incorporating third party eLearning targets you will leave with multiple portfolio additions including the pre-hospital certificate, an essential for NHS employment.
