Study Details

PhD 4 years Full-time

Biological chemistry research, including structural and chemical biology, has its epicentre in the York Structural Biology Laboratory (YSBL). Work focuses on the fundamental chemical bases for biological and biochemical processes, the use of small molecules to probe cellular biology, software and methods development and on the exploitation of enzymes in biocatalysis.

Research projects can be carried out in virtually any area of chemistry as long as a suitable project and supervisor can be allocated meaning you can specialise in your own specific area of interest. You will work under the guidance of an academic supervisor who is expert in that particular field, and alongside other members of the research group including academics, post-doctoral researchers as well as fellow postgraduate students. To be considered for postgraduate study you need to submit a formal application.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for research programmes should have, or expect to receive a minimum of a 2.1 or equivalent in a chemistry related subject. We recommend that you visit departmental research pages and contact potential supervisors to discuss the research areas you are interested in. This will help to ensure a proper match between you and your prospective supervisor.
If you are a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability. You need to show enough fluency in all aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to the required level of the course you're applying to.
