Our research has been judged world leading in biochemistry, chronic disease, microbiology, plant biology and ecology and it is competitive internationally in all fields. With a commitment to interdisciplinary research, we cover the whole spectrum of modern biological disciplines, from field ecology to protein structure, and have a collaborative ethos with no artificial internal divisions.

All students benefit from a balanced programme of training in broader research related skills. Our research is arranged in eight foci that use state of the art technology to address global challenges: Impacting on health and disease; Sustainably providing food and fuel; Environmental change; Ecology and Evolution; Infection and Immunity; Microbiology; Plant Biology; Cell and developmental Biology; Biochemistry and Biophysics; Molecular and Cellular Medicine; Bioinformatics and Mathematical Biology.

Entry Requirements

For entry to our research degree programmes, applicants will normally be expected to have a good honours degree (first or upper second class or equivalent) in any biological subject. We will consider applicants with backgrounds in Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Environment, Mathematics, Medicine or Physics who can demonstrate a commitment to the biosciences.
If you are a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability. You need to show enough fluency in all aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to the required level of the course you're applying to. For more information, see:
