Study Details

MSc 1 year Full-time, MSc 2 years Part-time

An MSc by Research is a one-year full-time or a two-year part-time masters degree programme. Students advance their knowledge or understanding of a particular aspect of the field of study. Our MSc by Research is an excellent way to get a one year masters qualification through independent research experience. It is commonly a stepping-stone to an MPhil, PhD or a research-related job. Students conduct a research project in the lab of a supervisor to produce a research thesis. An MSc by Research thesis will be narrower in scope than an MPhil thesis, although it should still contain some original work. The degree can start at any point in the year. The application procedure is similar to an MPhil and PhD, with students applying to a specific supervisor who is expert in the student's research area of interest.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally be expected to have a good Honours degree (1st or upper 2nd Class or equivalent) in any biological subject. We will consider applicants with backgrounds in chemistry, computer science, electronics, environment, mathematics, medicine or physics who can demonstrate a commitment to the biosciences.
If you are a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability. You need to show enough fluency in all aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to the required level of the course you're applying to.
