About the University of Essex

From the moment our doors opened in 1964, the University of Essex has been dedicated to challenging the status quo. Driven by the spirit of the 1960’s counter-culture, our founding Vice-Chancellor, Sir Albert Sloman, cleared the path for “a new kind of university.” Over six decades, Essex has attracted progressive and ambitious students with its bold vision. Today, we’re a home for forward-thinking students all over the world who want to bring about real change. This commitment is at the heart of our mission.

Our campuses

We have three campuses that make up the University of Essex, based in Colchester, Southend and Loughton. Though all campuses are in the county of Essex (in the East of England), each location provides a unique experience.

Gold-rated education

Our degree courses are taught by world-leading academics. You’ll receive the same excellent education that earned Essex a Gold award for teaching excellence (most recent TEF, 2017). Our pioneering work and ground-breaking research continue to push the frontiers of knowledge.

Research excellence

Essex has a history of radical innovation, firmly establishing the University’s reputation for research excellence. The University has received several research awards including; the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for outstanding social science research (2017), a Times University of the Year award (THE Awards 2018) and we’re ranked in the top 25 for research quality (The Times Good University Guide 2021).

Be part of a global community

Our diverse community at Essex is made up of students from all over the globe. You’ll meet people from over 130 countries and will experience the world in one place. This appreciation and celebration of diversity has helped the University rise to 4th in the UK for international outlook (Times HE World University Rankings 2021).

A focus on mindfulness

Located on the award-winning Wivenhoe Park (which has won a Green Flag Award four years in a row), peace and tranquillity are on your doorstep. Covering 200 acres of serene parkland, the grounds of our Colchester Campus provide the perfect place to both relax and think big. Our parkland was named one of the best in the country (People’s Choice Awards 2019) and even inspired the famous artist John Constable to paint its beautiful vistas.

Mental health support

In addition to the restorative nature of the park, Essex has a dedicated mental health services team, and a strong supportive community. We were also the first university in the country to setup Nightline; a volunteer-run service that offers support to students every night during term-time.

Scholarships and bursaries

Whether you’re studying for your postgraduate Masters or research degree, we offer a range of scholarships and bursaries. If you’re an Essex graduate you may qualify for our alumni discount which provides up to 33% off your postgraduate tuition fees for a year. In addition, a £1,000 bursary is available to Essex alumni who study a selected Masters course. The bonus is that you can receive both the bursary and the discount!

Employability and your future

Our excellent teaching standards will provide you with the necessary skills to prepare for your career. Just six months after graduation, 91% of Essex postgraduate students are in employment or further study (Graduate Outcomes 2020). Past and present Essex researchers are also counted in the top 2% of the world’s most cited researchers in several disciplines (Stanford University study 2021).
