MA 1 Year FT, 2 Years PT

Course Description

Choose Kingston’s Development and Globalisation MA

The Development and Globalisation MA gives you an opportunity to pursue and research topical issues surrounding the emergence of the modern financialised and globalised economy and its relationship to economic development. You will examine the post Bretton Woods international financial regime and study its influence on economic growth in developing countries. You will address questions such as: has the new regime of financialisation changed the ‘rules of the game’ between countries? The effects of globalisation on international labour markets and the role of human resource and educational development are also discussed along with their influence upon the labour processes in both developing and developed economies. This degree is good preparation for work with official agencies concerned with problems of development and globalisation such as the United Nations and the International Labor Organization, as well as NGOs concerned with these issues.

The programme is one of a suite of MA degrees in economics at Kingston University that are focused on giving graduates the ability and confidence at analysing and offering solutions to real-world problems.
You will develop the ability to make a critical evaluation of economic policies and the theories and research that underpin them and gain the ability to write and communicate on economic topics at an advanced level, within your chosen area of specialisation.

All MA economics courses share modules dealing with core aspects of macroeconomic and microeconomic theory, applied econometrics and economic policy at an advanced level. Comprehension and evaluation of a range of contrasting economic models will form an important part of your study, but in addition you will develop skills in using economic models and in applying economic analysis to formulating, implementing and criticising policy. You will be encouraged to develop theoretical and applied economic knowledge and understanding within your specific sphere of interest.

What will you study?

In the Development and Globalisation MA you will engage with the core graduate economic analysis necessary for advanced level economics research: Macro- and Microeconomic Theory and Applied Econometrics and Economic Policy.

In addition, you will pursue intensive study of the contemporary globalised and financialised economy and its relationship to economic development in Financialisation, Globalisation and Economic Policy and in Development & International Economics. These modules serve as excellent preparation to pursue high-level research on these topics in the dissertation. You will work individually with a member of staff to choose a topic for your dissertation, research this topic and write up your conclusions.

You will emerge from this degree with a precise and professional knowledge of issues that are the focus of current controversy and public concern.
