Course Description

On this course you will develop both personal and leadership skills. The three main areas of study are industry knowledge, developing leadership and the importance of the outdoors as a medium for learning, education and personal development.Outdoor and adventurous activities have recently seen remarkable growth. In response to this, our course will enhance your expertise as a reflective outdoor practitioner who is able to recognise and adopt best practice keeping ahead of current changes in this dynamic field.By evaluating current trends in industry and education, you will learn to provide adventurous opportunities to a wide spectrum of people from schools and community participation to elite performers. Taught by leading experts, this course draws on 25 years of teaching outdoor and adventurous activity for education and personal development.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Sports Science, Sport Development, Physical Education or Qualified Teacher Status, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; all applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements.
 
IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Explore the nature, origins, values and personal philosophies of outdoor and adventurous activities as you reflect on your own and other’s experiences.

Learn the skills you need to become a practitioner in Outdoor and Adventurous Education. You will analyse and evaluate your own and other people’s practice to inform your teaching.

Evaluate theories, models and processes and apply them and the experiential learning and practice gained through outdoor activities to your leadership practice.

This module provides an understanding of the value of styles of research beyond those you might initially expect to adopt yourself, while also giving you the chance to focus on approaches particularly relevant to your interests.

This module allows you to engage in the negotiation, planning, implementation and evaluation of a major independent study of research relevant to your personal interests and course.
