This course is designed for graduates and those currently working in clinical practice. Built on solid scientific and practical foundations, the course provides an interdisciplinary perspective. This gives you the chance to develop your broader knowledge and skills, as well as tailor your studies to your specific interests and aspirations in the field of clinical exercise physiology.
Teaching combines classroom, lab and extensive practice-based learning, providing you with the experience and knowledge to confidently conduct exercise testing and assessments. You’ll learn to design, deliver and evaluate evidence-based exercise interventions for patients with long-term conditions such as:
Cardiovascular e.g. coronary heart disease, heart failure and peripheral artery disease
Cancer e.g. breast, prostate, and colon
Renal e.g. chronic kidney disease
Metabolic disease e.g. obesity, diabetes and dyslipidaemia
Respiratory e.g. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Neurological e.g. stroke
Musculoskeletal e.g. arthritis
Mental health e.g. anxiety disorders
Our teaching team consists of registered clinical exercise physiologists, physiotherapists, consultant cardiologists and surgeons – as well as experienced professionals from the world of psychology and nutrition. Many of our staff offer clinical sector experience, together with well-established links and contacts throughout the industry. All this feeds directly into our teaching and boosts your employability prospects.
A highlight of the course is the Clinical Placement module. You’ll gain substantial experience in a clinical setting to ensure you develop a range of transferable skills to take forward in your career.
In preparation for your placement, you'll have to complete clinical competencies assessments. This is mandatory to become a registered CEP and, upon passing all assessments, allows you to automatically apply for AHCS registration.
At least a 2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant science or health-related subject (eg Sport and Exercise Science or Human Physiology).
IELTS requirements for international students are set at an overall score of 6.5 with no element below 6.0 for reading and writing and 6.0 for speaking and listening.

With applied learning and strong clinical partnerships, this course prepares you to confidently step into a career that makes a difference. A key feature of the course is a substantial clinical placement – with opportunities at organisations such as Prehab4Cancer, Heartbeat North West, and several NHS Trusts.
You’ll graduate equipped to pursue roles in a wide range of healthcare environments, including the NHS, universities, specialist providers, and private hospitals like Nuffield Health. Potential career paths include:
Cardiac rehabilitation
Pulmonary rehabilitation
Cancer prehabilitation
Health screening and intervention
Obesity management
Exercise therapy for special populations
Research or further study
This is more than a qualification – it’s a launchpad for a meaningful, people-focused career. With the clinical experience, scientific grounding and confidence you’ll gain, you’ll be ready to lead in a rewarding, growing field.
If you don’t pass the Pre-Placement Assessment of Competencies module, you won’t be able to complete the clinical placement and so will not graduate with an exit award in MSc Clinical Exercise Physiology. Instead, you’ll complete the Research Project module and graduate with an exit award in MSc Clinical Exercise Science.
