Course Description

This MA gives you the chance to study the Archaeology, Literature, History and Theology & Religion of these periods in a World Heritage site.

You’ll be able to choose from a range of modules taught by the leading experts in their field, design your own short courses, receive training in research skills, run your own reading group, undertake work placements, and complete a dissertation.

You’ll join a vibrant and supportive postgraduate community, where you can participate in and present at workshops, seminars, and conferences.

Due to staffing constraints, we cannot offer the following modules:

King Henry I: Lion of Justice

Kingship, Rebellion and Conquest: England under Henry II and Edward I

From Richard II to the Wars of the Roses: Politics and Society, 1377-1509

Imagining England: Landscape and Identity in Medieval and Early Modern Literature

We can offer Early Modern Authorship, however.

The MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies is for anyone interested in studying the premodern past in depth. Our students usually include recent graduates wishing to continue their studies, mature students returning to study after a longer or shorter time of pursuing other interests, and secondary-school teachers seeking professional development.

Entry Requirements

A 2:2 honours degree in History or a relevant discipline is required. Holders of other qualifications will be considered individually.

If English is not your first language you require an IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no element below 5.5 for most standard undergraduate and postgraduate courses. There are some exceptions and if the IELTS requirement differs it will be specified on the course page.
