Our MSc Zoo Conservation Biology course is delivered in close collaboration with Chester Zoo – the most visited zoo in the UK and a global leader in zoo conservation. This unique relationship gives you access to cutting-edge expertise, facilities, and a professional network that no other course can offer.
During the Zoo Conservation module, you'll learn directly from zoo practitioners. You’ll benefit from hands-on teaching at the zoo itself, ensuring your learning is grounded in real-world conservation practice.
Designed for those aiming to build a career in the conservation and research of captive populations, the course takes a strong numerical and research-focused approach. You'll gain specialist skills that are highly sought after in the conservation sector.
You’ll then choose between a field course or a placement as part of the Field Techniques in Zoo Conservation Biology module. Field course destinations may include locations in Europe or East Africa.* Alternatively, you can arrange a three-month placement at a UK zoo or aquarium tailored to your career goals.
Back on campus, you’ll benefit from access to one of the leading university-based amphibian conservation research facilities. With 100% of our research in ecology and environment rated world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021), you’ll learn alongside leading researchers to address urgent conservation challenges. This on-site facility gives you the chance to apply theory in a practical, career-focused environment.
We offer expert teaching, strong research support and deep ties with zoos and conservation facilities around the world. This ensures you graduate with the knowledge, experience and professional connections needed to thrive in several zoo-based conservation roles.
*Please note, European destinations are included in the course fees, however other global settings are subject to an additional fee. There may also be other costs involved, such as those associated with international travel visas.
You’ll need a UK honours degree – normally a 2:2 – or the international equivalent, in a relevant subject. We might also consider your application if you have several years’ professional experience in a related field.
Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification.
