MA Applied Mental Health Practice

Course Description

This part-time interprofessional programme is delivered in conjunction with Cheshire Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) Partnership and incorporates the AMHP training programme.

Our programme is transitionally approved by the Health and Care Professions Council. 

Entry Requirements

The course is available to:

  • Registered social workers
  • First level nurses – their field of practice being mental health or learning disabilities nursing
  • Occupational therapists
  • Chartered psychologists

Applicants will have two years’ post-registration experience and be nominated and supported by their employer.

Student Destinations

On successful completion of the AMHP training, candidates will be eligible for approval by the Local Authority to undertake the statutory role of the AMHP under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Module Details

Postgraduate Certificate (incorporates AMHP training)

The following modules will be completed:

  • Mental Health Law and Policy
  • Critical Perspectives on Mental Health
  • Legal Processes in Mental Health Practice

Postgraduate Diploma

In addition to the above modules, students will also complete 3 further modules from the list of options below

  • Preparation for AMHP Practice
  • Learning and Assessment in Practice
  • Best Interests Assessor Training
  • Work-related Professional
  • CBT Intervention
  • Research

Masters degree

In addition to the above modules, students will also complete a 16,000-word dissertation.
