Course Description

Our Contemporary India MA programme provides a comprehensive framework of study and will develop your expertise in one of a number of disciplinary and professional fields. It will equip you to deal with the conceptual challenges relating to work in and on India and to analyse the fundamental problems of contemporary India in relation to global concerns.

Entry Requirements

General entry advice

Bachelor’s degree with 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent).

Applicants from good Indian universities normally require a 60% or above in arts, humanities or social science subjects. Professional qualifications and experience may be taken into account.

  • Making of Contemporary India: Political Power and Social Order in Historical Perspective (20 credits)
  • Contemporary India II: State, Society and Economy since 1947
Optional Modules

You will also take 80 credits from a range of optional modules. Students should choose at least 40 credits from a range of optional modules offered by the India Institute. 

  • India’s Economy: Structures, Challenges and Policies (20 credits)
  • Religion and Politics in India and Pakistan (20 credits)
  • India’s Foreign and Security Policy (20 credits)
  • Interpreting India (20 credits)
  • Anthropology of New Economies (20 credits)
  • Applied Research Methods (20 credits)
  • Democracy and its Discontents (20 credits)

Students may also select modules offered by other departments, from a wide range of optional modules offered by the School of Global Affairs, Department of War Studies, History Department, Department of European and International Studies, Department of Geography, Department of Political Economy and the Modern Languages Centre.
