In 2009, ‘Identifying and Teaching Children and Young People with Dyslexia and Literacy Difficulties’ was published and one recommendation was to build capacity within schools and improve access to specialist,
The MA Dyslexia Research and Practice is an advanced degree programme which aims to address this recommendation by offering bespoke training to dyslexia practitioners. The course offers accreditation by the British Dyslexia Association.
As a result of participating, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of dyslexia and be able to make a real difference to children and colleagues in their schools and communities of practice.

Graduates from the MA Dyslexia Research and Practice will enhance their professional and career opportunities as well as develop personal skills in critical thinking, academic writing and research linked to emergent theory, education policy and leading-edge practice.
The Postgraduate Certificate, for students with qualifies teacher status (QTS), leads to Approved Teacher Status (ATS) of the British Dyslexia Association and students become “Specialist Teachers.” For non-QTS students the Postgraduate Certificate leads to Approved Practitioner Status (APS) of the British Dyslexia Association.
The Postgraduate Diploma (Option 2) leads to Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association and students become assessors for dyslexia. Students who successfully complete can apply for an Assessment Practising Certificate.
The Postgraduate Diploma (Option 2) and the MA Dyslexia (Research and Practice) leads to a broader awareness of dyslexia in a wider context. Students may work with children and young people with dyslexia in schools or in settings other than schools and/or with adults with dyslexia in employment.
You will develop:
– Skills in identifying and assessing the literacy abilities of individual children, young people and/or adults.
– Teaching skills using a structured, cumulative and multisensory approach.
– Confidence in participating in debate around dyslexia and in advising colleagues and parents.
– Competence in devising and implementing appropriate teaching interventions.
– Skills in writing assessment reports for a range of individuals and purposes (Option 2)
