Course Description

  • This unique programme draws on the research interests of a large number of university staff in the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine. It allows you the chance to obtain experience in a wide range of modern research techniques.
  • Glasgow offers considerable expertise in this area of biology, especially in:
    • ornithology
    • fish biology
    • aquatic ecosystems
    • epidemiology
    • modelling
    • physiological, molecular and evolutionary ecology.
  • On-campus facilities are complemented by excellent research and teaching facilities available at the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment (SCENE) and Cochno Farm and Research Centre.
  • Tailor the MRes Ecology and Environmental Biology programme to your own specific requirements and interests from the courses and projects offered.

Entry Requirements

A Second-class Honours degree or equivalent (e.g. GPA of 3.0 or above) in a relevant scientific subject. Professional experience may be taken into account.

Student Destinations

You will be provided with excellent training for applying for a PhD programme or entering work in ecological consultancy, governmental agencies or conservation sectors.

The MRes also serves as a valuable introduction to UK research for overseas students.

There are considerable opportunities to undertake research work in the UK and overseas.

MRes projects in the past have involved field-work in some of Scotland’s most important natural environments including:

Graduates from these programmes (MSc, MRes) have entered a wide range of roles in academia, business and the third sector.

Examples of job roles in the UK and North America include:

  • fisheries biologist
  • data manager
  • associate marine scientist
  • training co-ordinator
  • fisheries research assistant

Some graduates have also gone on to study PhDs in evolutionary biology, biological sciences and wildlife biology.
