Course Description

The MA in Educational Leadership has been designed to provide leaders and aspiring leaders in schools, colleges and other educational contexts with an opportunity to achieve a Masters-level qualification which recognises professional development undertaken through professional practice or programmes.

Students enter the programme by making a claim for previous learning through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) process – for example holders of National College of Teaching and Leadership awards – and then undertake modules for the remainder of their programme taking into account their setting and individual needs.

The MA in Educational Leadership recognises previously undertaken professional development.  It is suitable for anyone leading or aspiring to leadership in a School, College, Local Authority, Academy, Free School or other educational setting.

The programme also presents an opportunity of taking modules which will lead to an MA in Educational Leadership (Faith Schools).

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally work in an educational environment, e.g. school, college, academy, local authority, free school or other educational setting. The minimum entry requirement is usually a first degree plus relevant experience. Candidates without these qualifications will be invited to attend an interview to ensure their suitability for the course

The MA in Educational Leadership is open to both graduates and non-graduates with professional experience although applicants will normally be graduates.

Student Destinations

Holders of the MA in Educational Leadership will have the qualities and transferable skills necessary for leading educational organisations requiring the exercise of initiative and responsibility and decision making in complex and unpredictable situations. Students who enrol on this programme will develop their potential as outstanding teachers or future leaders in educational settings.

 Learning Activities:

Learning activities will include delivery methods such as lectures, group discussions and learning conversations through the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and action research.

  • CD7605 The Psychology of Leadership
  • CD7606 Leading Change in Schools
  • CD7607 Leading Governance in Schools
  • CD7608 Globalisation of Education*
  • CD7609 Systems Leadership*
  • CD7032 Research Design*
  • CD7208 Dissertation

* Subject to approval

In addition, you can undertake an optional Negotiated Study module of either 20 or 40 credits.

Those wishing to exit with the full MA Award must also take the Dissertation module of 60 credits.

Accrediation of Prior Learning

Students enter the programme by making a claim for previous learning through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) process and then undertake a range of modules for the remainder of their programme taking into account their school and individual needs.

For those entering with National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) awards, the following APEL claims can be made:

  • NPQML – 40 credits
  • NPQSL – 60 credits
  • NPQH – 100 credits

Credits for other qualifications such as those from the National Assocation of Schools Business Managers (NASBM) will be discussed on an indivdual basis.
