Course Description

This topical and market-led Masters programme commenced in 2004 and is delivered as a two-year part-time programme in Dublin, allowing students to study alongside personal and work commitments. Students travel from all over Ireland for the series of six long weekend modules which is then followed by a period of home-based learning.

The aims of this postgraduate programme are for students to develop:

  • a thorough understanding of the practical application of exercise and nutrition guidelines and theories to practise
  • a critical understanding of the concepts and controversies in exercise and nutrition science
  • a scientific and enquiring approach to the study of contemporary exercise and nutrition issues
  • research skills for the critical investigation of exercise and nutrition topics

Features: 

  • Provides postgraduate education and training opportunities for exercise, nutrition and health professionals, and provide opportunities for those aspiring to work in this high-profile field.
  • On completion graduates will possess many of the competences necessary to join the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register (SENr) or undertake BASES supervised experience to gain BASES accreditation.
  • A part-time course with taught modules that are delivered in three-day blocks to facilitate attendance from students who are in employment or who travel nationally or internationally to attend the programe, returning home following each module to complete their assessment through distance learning.
  • This multidisciplinary programme attracts students from a wide age range and diverse array of backgrounds.
  • There are no formal examinations.

Entry Requirements

The course is open to applicants with a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in a related subject area, or equivalent professional qualifications.

Consideration will also be given to applicants with relevant work experience, background knowledge and skills.

Module Details

Taught Modular Programme

The programme consists of six taught modules and a research dissertation.

  • Each taught module is worth 20 masters level credits and involves a 20-25 hour, three-day block course (Friday, Saturday and Sunday: 9.30am – 5.00pm) followed by a period of home-based distance learning.
  • Taught modules occur approximately every eight weeks.
  • Five modules are delivered in Dublin, and one module is delivered in Chester.
