Course Description

The Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC) is part of the vocational stage of training for those wishing to qualify as solicitors. The course is recognised by the Solicitors’ Regulatory Authority (SRA) and meets the Legal Practice Course Outcomes set by the SRA.



The LPC prepares you by offering a learning environment that focuses on case studies that provide a general foundation for practice in the solicitors profession. In the workshops you are supported in the development of your understanding and exploration of concepts of professionalism and the demands of professional practice. Based in the heart of the city’s legal district, Leeds Law School encourages and supports you to improve your employment prospects by building links with the legal community. The subject coverage is prescribed by the SRA and delivered by staff with significant professional expertise (all are qualified lawyers).

Entry Requirements

:Applicants should either have at least a second class honours qualifying Law degree, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (GDL/CPE), or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; all applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements.
 
IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Student Destinations

If you complete the LPC youll be able to proceed to the next stage of legal training as a solicitor by way of a training contract. The LPC provides credit points at masters level. You can enhance future employability by completing a top-up dissertation with a view to being awarded a masters in Law.

Module Details

Learn the basic practical advocacy skills and knowledge to present cases effectively before courts and tribunals.

You will be introduced to a range of business vehicles, primarily partnerships and companies and will examine law and practice in relation to their formation, on-going management and dissolution.

Learn to apply the principles of good drafting in the creation and amendment of formal legal documents.

Gain effective interviewing skills for communicating with clients and responding to their needs and instructions.

Gain the skills required to provide advice and assistance to a client in the critical stages of civil and criminal litigation.

This module will introduce you to a range of primary and secondary legal sources and will enable you to use these sources to analyse and evaluate factual situations and produce legal solutions.

Gain an understanding of professional ethics and learn to apply and act in accordance with the core duties of the Solicitors’ Code of Conduct.

Gain the skills required to provide advice and assistance to a client in relation to each of the critical stages of a property transaction.

This module will teach you a basic understanding of the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules 1998.

Gain the necessary skills required to be able to advise clients in relation to the taxation framework in England and Wales.
