MRes Linguistics

    MRes 1 year full time, 2 years part time

Course Description

On this flexible programme, you will study in the UK’s top department for linguistic research. You can select a pathway that suits your research and career plans. Our Linguistics MA also has a Research Practicum option, where you can take a placement with one of our staff. You’ll gain practical experience in conducting linguistics research. In addition to your dissertation, you can work as a research assistant on one of our research projects.

  • Choose from four specialist pathways: Conversion, General, Specialisation in Sociolinguistics or Specialisation in Formal Linguistics
  • Research placement option

Entry Requirements

An upper second class in a taught postgraduate degree with a significant linguistics component, or a first class honours undergraduate linguistics degree.

Additional information

A compelling PhD proposal that is an excellent fit for the research interests and expertise of our staff is also required.

Student Destinations

This course is designed to give you an excellent preparation for doctoral study. You’ll attend our interdisciplinary training workshops throughout the year, which will provide specialist linguistics training, as well as guidance on how to write journal articles, research ethics and knowledge transfer in general.

Our MRes programme is linked to our accredited Economics and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Centre, run in partnership with King’s College London (KCL), so we have excellent links if you want to pursue PhD research.

We also provide you with a superb professional network: our MRes cohort form close links during and after their degree. You’re part of our community and even after graduation, you’ll still be invited to our events and networking opportunities.
