Course Description

Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are a prevalent and major cause of ill health and physical disability in the UK as well as globally. They can reduce quality of life; impacting on family and relationships, as well as limiting capacity to work. This is a growing area of healthcare which takes up 30% of UK GP caseloads.

The Musculoskeletal Management programme will provide medical and health professionals with the knowledge and skills to assess, triage and care for patients with MSK conditions; to apply the clinical theory, practice and associated research in the prevention, assessment and management of MSK conditions within contemporary healthcare. It will enable professionals to commission and respond to evolutionary changes in the structure and provision of health care. It will increase the practitioner’s knowledge of the multidisciplinary team’s role in managing MSK disease and explore new ways of working.

Entry Requirements

Applicants admitted onto the course will meet the following requirements:

  • Must hold MBBS/ MBChB qualification or relevant professional healthcare qualification/ registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or relevant regulatory body e.g. Qualified Physiotherapist registered with HCPC.
  • Medical students who have completed a minimum of 3 years MBChB or MBBS are also eligible to apply.
  • Be actively engaged in, or have access to, clinical experience in musculoskeletal practice in order to support learning within the programme.
  • Have sufficient competency in English language (IELTS Level 6.5 or equivalent)

Year 1 (Postgraduate Certificate)
Musculoskeletal Management of the Upper Limb
Musculoskeletal Management of the Lower Limb
Compulsory module: Management of Spinal Dysfunction
A wide range of optional modules allow the practitioner to study a relevant, bespoke programme.
Year 2 (Postgraduate Diploma)
Research Methods for Clinical Practice, Education and Management
40 credits from the following optional modules:
Injection Therapy (20)
Integrating Public Health and Primary Care (20)
Leadership in Medical Practice (20)
Leadership and Business Planning for Allied Health Professionals (20)
Non-Medical Prescribing (Must be registered with relevant Professional Body with prescribing rights) (40)
A wide range of optional modules allow the practitioner to study a relevant, bespoke programme.
Year 3 (MSc)
Dissertation – independent study utilising critical appraisal and research skills to develop MSK practice
