Course Description

Our MA in Music Education is a unique course for musicians interested in developing their instrumental and vocal teaching skills.

You’ll explore practical and theoretical concepts of music education, as well as aspects of psychology, music psychology and health. By drawing on your own experiences, reading academic literature and putting new ideas into practice within your teaching, you’ll develop your understanding of instrumental pedagogy and develop strategies for reflective practice, helping you to enhance your capabilities and confidence as a teacher.

The course is led by Dr Elizabeth Haddon LRSM, whose research on instrumental pedagogy has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and in her two co-edited volumes on creativity. Delivering the course alongside her are Dr Naomi Norton, who has specialist expertise in musicians’ health and wellbeing as well as experience as Teaching Artist with In Harmony Opera North; Dr Richard Powell, a violinist, teacher and researcher specialising in music analysis; Dr Caroline Waddington-Jones, who has expertise in music psychology, special educational needs and performance; Dr Jennifer Cohen, a flautist, teacher, and community music practitioner, with experience of working in a variety of performance and educational settings; Bella Powell, who has experience of private and Music Service string teaching; Hannah Rodger, who teaches voice, harp and piano; Polly Sharpe, an experienced piano teacher, accompanist and ABRSM examiner; and Edwina Smith, who has taught flute for many years privately and in higher music education, and who performs regularly on baroque and modern flutes.

Entry Requirements

2:1 or equivalent in Music. We will also consider your application if you have a 2:2 and relevant professional experience.
