Course Description

Train as a teacher in school settings. Share your love of learning. Qualify to teach in any school in England or Wales.

If you have a degree and three or more years’ work experience, you can choose to train as a teacher at a school instead of at a university. You’ll graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and you can choose to specialise in either primary or secondary level teaching.

Entry Requirements

For both Primary and Secondary routes you will usually need a 2:2 (or above) honours degree from a UK Higher Education institution or an equivalent qualification and be deemed suitable to train to teach by the School of Education at the University of Sunderland.

You should also hold a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Science, and English Language and a range of National Curriculum subjects. If you have studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above. We will only accept equivalencies from http://equivalencytesting.com.

For School Direct Salaried route

For both Primary and Secondary level you must have:

  • At least three years’ work experience. It doesn’t have to be related to education
  • A personal statement which demonstrates evidence of teaching and academic potential
  • Supportive academic/professional references
  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • A completed medical proforma (based on DFEE Circular 8/92)

School Direct Tuition route only

For both Primary and Secondary level you must also have:

  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • A completed medical pro forma (based on DFEE Circular 8/92)
