MA Social Work

UK/EU Students: A good honours degree (at least 2:2) in one of the following subjects: Sociology; Social Policy; Politics; Psychology; Law; Health and/or Social Care. Holders of all other degrees will require a minimum 2:1. Degrees in joint subjects will be considered on their own merits but the above subjects would normally need to constitute at least 50% of credits for a degree of 2:2 to be accepted. Before applying applicants must have experience commensurate with the demands of the course – typically at least one year’s full time experience (or part-time equivalent) in paid employment or structured voluntary work with a relevant organisation. All candidates must have GCSE Grade C in English Language and Mathematics or acceptable equivalent. In completing the Personal Statement all applicants must: demonstrate an understanding of the aims of Social Work; recognise the positive effects of Social Work intervention; show awareness of the multi-disciplinary nature of Social Work; comment on personal qualities that make them suitable for the course – substantiated with relevant examples; demonstrate readiness to learn about inequality and discrimination Candidates must give specifics on the experience they have undertaken eg details of duties; duration of experience; context of experience (course placement; volunteer work; actual employment etc). Candidates must comment on the insight they have gained into Social Work through their experiences. Candidates must show their awareness of the variety of scope within Social Work and not confine themselves to one area (eg child welfare). Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the role of research in informing Social Work practice. This is a highly selective course and only the strongest applicants will be invited for interview.
